Moving on from the days when business naming was simply picking the entrepreneurs’ names; when Henry Ford simply named his auto manufacturing business Ford and Will Kellog went with Kellog’s, we seek to find out how the companies and businesses around arrived at their names and who named it. If possible what their alternative names were.
Question – would you have named your website that seeks to inspire people to live their dreams ‘WealthyGorilla’? Frankly, if DomainRoll listed this name and valued it Gold or even Silver+ would you have agreed? At 14 characters and with a gorilla in the picture?
I saw this name in the search results when searching for something unrelated to naming and immediately I noticed the name, I decided that it deserves a place here. Further research showed it was a popular and successful site. Hear this from the founder:
What is unique about the way you run Wealthy Gorilla? Is there a competitive advantage that you have over the rest?
To be honest, I don’t know there’s any particular way, or style if you like; just my own. In the beginning, I would try and copy successful websites, and it didn’t go down too well.
Now, I just carry out everything to how I would like it. The name, the logo, the design, the way everything is done. It’s all my personal style, and if people like it that way then that’s what’ll keep them coming back!
Dan Western is the founder and CEO of Wealthy Gorilla. He created the site roughly around April 2014, and funnily enough it was only created at first to serve as a promotional tool for an eBook he was writing.
After only 7 days of having registered the domain name, he decided to completely scratch the eBook and get serious with Wealthy Gorilla, in the hopes to make it a professional and well respected blog.
For now I don’t know why he decided this name, but intend to get the details. But at least we know it is something about his ‘personal style’.
Reddit.com from “Read it”. Read – the past tense of read.
The name Reddit is little more than a play on the phrase “read it,” as in, “I read it online.” But, as one member of the site (also known as a “redditor”) pointed out, there is a Latin parallel to the site’s name that turned out to be a pretty cool coincidence.
Naming tip I picked from this – think of the function your business or website is going to perform and use that in naming your business.
